How To Get a College Degree

Know Your Math and Read Well!

To become a college graduate it is important to have strong math and literacy skills. And math knowledge is essential to be successful in 70% of careers and strong literacy skills in over 60%.  

Math

Strong math skills are essential to do well on college entrance exams and to excel in college level coursework.  

 

High school students

 

Students preparing for college entrance exams must have mastered high school algebra and have a strong understanding of data analysis and geometry.  Sample SAT and ACT math questions demonstrate the value of mastering these high school level math courses.    

 

College students

 

Students interested in majoring in STEM related fields will be expected to take college level math courses that build on high school math.  These courses include Vector Calculus, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations.  

 

Most college students will also be required to take classes in statistics including those majoring in the social sciences and humanities.  

Literacy

Strong literacy skills are also essential to do well on college entrance exams and to excel in college level coursework. 

 

High school students

 

Students taking college entrance exams must have mastered high school literary analysis and composition and have a strong foundation of US and World literature. Sample SAT and ACT literacy questions demonstrate the value of mastering high school level literacy content.   

 

College students

 

Students interested in majoring in the social sciences or humanities are often expected to read around 3-4 different texts and submit term papers ranging from 5-10 pages per course.   Students with strong literacy skills will be prepared to sucessfully complete these reading and writing requirements in college.
